LANGUAGE & RELIGION

Bhutan has a nostalgic passion for its language and religion. Bhutan never compromises on these two.

  LANGUAGE
Dzongkha is the national language of Bhutan, which is widely spoken in western region. The people in the east speak sharchop, where as the people in the south speak Nepali. English has been used as the medium of instruction and is spoken by all government officials and businessmen. The national newspaper [Kuensel] is written in Dzongkha, English and Nepali.

  RELIGION
Although nothing is known of the religion of Bhutan before the 7th century, it is said by some writers to have been 'ANISMISTIC'.

But, with the advent of Buddhism in 7th century the animists gradually disappeared from the country.

The country's official religion is Drukpa Kagyup Buddhism. The Bhutanese people of Nepali origin in the south practice Hinduism.
